How Global Helps City National Bank Break Down Silos

When Loraine White, Manager of Training and Development for Los Angeles-based City National Bank—Southern California’s largest bank—wanted to take proactive steps to develop the company’s leadership group, she turned to Global Leadership Management Resources because of its track record of improving communication across organizations and equipping leaders with the tools necessary to succeed.

“I’d heard about Global’s use of DiSC and the company’s Leadership Film Series and had 12 senior vice presidents and executives attend the program,” White says. “Between them, the 12 executives—the majority of whom are in operations—manage over 850 employees.”

Global’s Leadership Film Series begins with attendees taking DiSC, a personal profile/human behavior assessment tool that helps pinpoint leadership styles. Then they’re shown a screening of “Twelve O'clock High,” which was voted #1 by Inc. Magazine as the most influential film in top executives' management careers. By studying the leadership styles, conduct and actions of the films’ characters, attendees experience the power of understanding the difference between managing people and leading colleagues toward a common goal—and the direct connectivity of the two.

The results were so good, that two more groups from City National Bank are attending the Leadership Film Series this November. “We started with senior management, and based on the results, we’re initiating it for the teams that report to those executives,” White says. “We’ve had complete buy-in from bank leadership."

Overall, the training has helped defuse communication issues and broken down silos because the leaders who attended the program now understand their own communication styles and the communication styles of others. “It’s important that leaders understand their own weaknesses as well as their strengths,” White says. “This is invaluable information for a leader who wants teams to deliver top-notch results.”

Here are three insights White gleaned from Global’s Leadership Film Series:

#1. DiSC Beats Myers-Briggs

The Leadership Film Series begins with a DiSC assessment. City National Bank’s leaders took the DiSC assessment and were briefed on the results in-house by Global’s Program Leader, Michael Starr, so they’d have a thorough understanding of their individual strengths and weaknesses and behavioral styles.

“I’ve worked with Myers-Briggs tests a lot, and there are some similarities between the two assessment tools,” White says, “but Disc takes the assessment to a deeper level and provides more insight into your own personal style and the ways to best communicate with others.”

#2. The Leadership Film Series goes beyond descriptions

While training offered by other companies tries to describe different leadership styles, Global’s Leadership Film Series allows participants to watch different leadership styles in action.

After receiving the results of their own DiSC, City National Bank participants were given DiSC profiles for each character in “Twelve O'clock High.” The participants focused on the character that came closest to their own DiSC profile when watching the movie and observed how that character interacted with others in the film. Global instructors stopped the movie at certain points for discussion.

“The movie provides a non-emotional way for leaders to explore their own communication style,” White says. “While some leaders remain a bit tight-lipped during the DiSC briefing, especially if they’ve been successful business leaders for many years, when they see their own leadership style portrayed in the movie, there are quite a few ‘Aha’ moments.”

#3. Follow up on what's learned

Having participants learn about their own leadership style and the communication styles of others is a crucial part of the Leadership Film Series, but it will not prove effective in the long run if the participants don’t focus on specific areas of improvement. “That’s the real benefit of the program,” White says. “Every executive came away with action items to work on and plans were made for each leader to meet one-on-one with Global’s Michael Starr.”

White says that the Leadership Film series has resulted in a renewed enthusiasm for discussing communications and leadership styles within the organization. “DiSC and the film series are so insightful, that leaders can either use it to gain a quick understanding of behavior or they can dig deeper to solve communication and relationship issues,” White says. “The Leadership Film series used alongside DiSC is a pretty amazing tool—especially in the hands of Global Leadership & Management Resources, a company that is very upbeat, accommodating, responsive, and fun to work with.”

Applause for Global’s Leadership Film Series:

“My team and I wanted to thank you for an outstanding program. Twelve O’clock High had an instant and positive impact on our team’s ability to interact efficiently and effectively. The combination of the DiSC Personality Profile analysis and the Twelve O’clock High movie was a unique and cutting edge approach to team building and leadership development. The program teaches a great lesson on the differences between management and leadership. It will certainly influence my management style moving forward. Additionally, the action plans developed during the session will provide a lasting legacy for the program. Your program will have an enduring impact on my team. The workshop from Global will be something that I recommend to others as a rewarding and valuable experience.”   M.S., Associate Director, Amgen
